CECC draws revises Definition and Principles for Handling Reinfection in Confirmed Cases
The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) revises the Definition and Principles for Handling Reinfection in Confirmed Cases as follows:
1. The Definition and Principles for Handling Reinfection in Confirmed Cases: If underlying chronic illnesses worsen or fever or new respiratory symptoms develop within between 14 days to 3 months from symptom onset of the previous infection or the day of the last positive test, and the result from an RT-PCR test is positive with a Ct value <27 for SARS-CoV-2 or the result from a rapid antigen/nucleic acid test is positive, and a doctor has determined that it is a "reinfection." After the case is reported, relevant epidemic prevention measures and medical treatment should be put in place in line with the principles for handling confirmed cases. If an infection occurs more than 3 months after symptom onset of the previous infection or the day of the last positive test, and the result from an RT-PCR test or a rapid antigen/nucleic acid test is positive for SARS-CoV-2, it is considered as a new infection.
2. If an RT-PCR test or a rapid antigen/nucleic acid test for SARS-CoV-2 comes back positive within 14 days from symptom onset of the previous infection, it is seen as the same infection.
3. If PCR-positive samples are collected from people with reinfections, health units or clinicians can send such specimens to the Center for Research, Diagnostics and Vaccine Development at the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control for genetic sequencing to facilitate continuous monitoring of the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 variants.
4. In order to expedite the prescription of drugs, after a reinfection is confirmed by a doctor, the doctor making the diagnosis can directly prescribe drugs according to the patient’s condition. However, if clinicians, health authorities, or the commanding officers or deputy commanding officers of regional Communicable Disease Control Medical Networks have doubts about the timing of prescribing drugs, the rule can be adjusted according to the instructions of the commanding officer in each region.
